Siri AI (Apple)

Built into iPhone, iPad and Mac, already holding your work mail, calendar and files, and on an unmanaged iPhone anyone can switch it on

Siri AI is Apple's assistant rebuilt as a conversational AI. It is in beta, in English, on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 for iPhone 15 Pro and later and iPads and Macs with M1 or later, with access released from a waitlist. Apple says its models were built in collaboration with Google's Gemini and run on the device and on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. It searches your mail, messages, notes and calendar, reads what is on screen, proofreads and rewrites text across apps, and acts inside them. In our 33 tests on an iPhone and a Mac it was strongest on proofreading, capture from paper and small actions it confirmed first, and weakest on finding and summarising our own material (Finding 1 of 6, Reading 1 of 7). Asked in the LinkedIn app for a post in our usual style, it wrote one presenting the author as part of the Apple team launching Siri AI, one tap from Post. Its reach comes from where it lives: it arrives with a software update, already holding the work mail on the phone.

For comms teams: proofreading and formal rewrites of short copy, read before sending.

Comms AI Pentathlon 2026

In a single blind run of eight AI assistants on five comms briefs (30 September 2026), Siri AI (Apple) placed 8th of 8 on the AI judges’ medal table (24.1 of 50) and 8th of 8 in a human judge’s blind ranking. Tested as: Siri app, iOS 27 beta. See every entry and score

Best for

  • • Proofreading and formal rewrites of short copy, read before sending
  • • Capturing business cards, printed agendas and handwritten notes from paper
  • • Small actions such as reminders, messages and calendar moves, which it confirms before acting
  • • Individual practitioners and small in-house teams already working on iPhone or Mac

Pricing

Included with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 on supported devices (iPhone 15 Pro and later, iPads and Macs with M1 or later). Beta, English only, with access released from a waitlist. Apple says daily usage limits apply and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.

Verified September 2026 against Apple's UK newsroom release of 14 September 2026. Apple has not announced the paid tier or its price. We hit no usage limit in a full day of testing.

What works well

  • + Nothing to buy or install beyond the iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 update
  • + It starts with the context already on the device, so there is nothing to brief or upload before it can help
  • + It asked before acting on every send and calendar change in our test, showing the message and the channel first
  • + Proofread fixed both planted errors and left a British spelling alone, and Review Changes shows the original with the rewrite
  • + Capture is strong, with all four Visual Intelligence tests working first time

Watch out for

  • - A beta behind a waitlist, and janky; our index sat at five per cent for two days, and later Siri said it was still indexing while Settings showed 100 per cent
  • - Finding and Reading scored worst, 1 of 6 and 1 of 7; asked what we needed to do from a thread, it read our sent email from the recipient's side and handed back her to-do list
  • - It fails confidently, insisting an emailed document had not arrived when it had, and in a LinkedIn draft it invented an Apple affiliation for the author
  • - Conversations are kept (Keep Conversations was already set to Forever) and appear on the Mac within seconds, client names included
  • - English only, not offered on iPhone or iPad in the EU at launch, and subject to daily usage limits, with paid expanded access to come

When to choose this

Choose Siri AI for proofreading, rewrites and capture on an iPhone or Mac you already carry, after checking Keep Conversations, Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence and App Access; do not choose it for research or monitoring, and keep from it anything you would not put in a personal email.

Who should look elsewhere

Anyone on Android or Windows, since Siri AI runs only on Apple devices. Anyone in the EU who wants it on an iPhone or iPad, where Apple is not offering it at launch. Teams that need media monitoring, research or a shared workspace should look at the Research & Intelligence, Monitoring & Measurement and Workflow & Productivity sections of this directory. And anyone on a managed iPhone or Mac should ask IT first, since device management can restrict Siri AI.

Key features

  • • Find, in conversation, across mail, messages, notes, calendar and files; it found the previous day's deck on the Mac and passed 1 of 6 finding tests
  • • Read, with summaries of Mail threads, notifications and whatever is on screen; notification summaries were accurate, and a six-message thread summary covered only the last reply
  • • Write, through the Proofread and Rewrite tools in Writing Tools across apps; Proofread fixed two planted errors and kept a British spelling, on iPhone and Mac
  • • Review Changes, which sets your original text against the rewrite so the edits can be checked before sending
  • • Do, with actions in Messages, Calendar, Reminders and Photos and a confirmation card before it sends or changes anything (3 of 4 worked first time)
  • • Watch, through Notify Me in Safari, which fired on time when a watched page changed, saying only that an update was detected
  • • See, through Visual Intelligence, which turned a business card, a printed agenda and handwritten notes into a contact, a calendar event and usable text (4 of 4)
  • • A Siri app that keeps your conversations and syncs them to your other Apple devices

Governance & data

Data inputs Mail, messages, notes, calendar, reminders, contacts and photos on the device, plus whatever is on screen when you ask; in our test it also drew on Safari history, voice memos, WhatsApp and files on the Mac. Scope is set per app in Siri's App Access screen and on each app's own page in Settings, where Show Content in Search is the switch that matters for content (EFF, 18 September 2026). No switch stops it reading a screen you show it, and we did not check whether a single mailbox, such as a work account, can be excluded on its own.
Model training & controls The Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence toggle (Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements), offered as a prompt when Siri AI switches on, allows Apple to collect and use your text and audio interactions with Siri, Dictation and Translate; with it on, the Siri settings footer said voice recordings and transcripts were being sent to Apple. It was on in our test. Requests run on the device or on Private Cloud Compute on Apple's servers; our Apple Intelligence Report named no third party, though Apple says the models were built with Google's Gemini, and even titling a conversation sent its full text to Apple's servers.
Admin, SSO & permissions Apple's iOS 27 enterprise notes say device management can restrict Siri AI, Visual Intelligence and natural-language calendar editing, and can separately disable the ChatGPT extension. An unmanaged phone has no admin console: the only controls are the user's own settings, and that is where the governance risk sits.
Audit trail & approvals The Siri app keeps your conversations; Keep Conversations offers 30 Days, 1 Year or Forever, and ours was already set to Forever. Conversations appeared on the Mac within seconds. Settings can generate an Apple Intelligence Report of requests sent to Private Cloud Compute.
Risk notes In our test it invented an Apple affiliation in a LinkedIn draft under the author's name, one tap from Post, and gave confident wrong answers on finding and reading tasks. It does not know which data is confidential: a general question about our work named a client unprompted, and synced history carries client names to the user's other Apple devices. Before client work, check three settings: Keep Conversations, Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence, and App Access for every app holding client material. Add it to the AI tool register even though nobody bought it; the AI Tool Register template is in the library (/library/governance/ai-tool-register/).

Governance information is based on publicly available vendor documentation. Verify with your vendor before procurement decisions.
